Steve asked what the rationale is behind not keeping 4-4 where coincidental
penalties would be put on the clock. The rationale given at the NCAA/ECAC/HE
Officials Meeting in Andover, MA last week, was that the object was to get as
many players playing at one time as possible, thus you allow 5 players to play
per side on coincidental penalties as opposed to 4 per side, 2 more players
playing 2 (or more) more minutes.
Personally, I like 3-3, 4-4, 4-3 and I am glad the NHL is playing that
way this year, but from the standpoint of allowing more participation, this
actually makes some sense.
