I'm curious about the funding for Minnesota's athletic department. Does it
receive state aid, or is it supposed to be self-sufficient like U of Nebraska's
or U of Michigan's? If the latter, then there's no reason to complain, they
need the hockey money to pay for other sports for Title IX reasons. But either
way, NCAA d1 athletics is a big business now, and colleges need all the cash
flow they can get to stay competitive on a facilities and salary basis.

Many people in Nebraska, especially educators, often complain about Frank
Solich being the highest paid employee of the state of Nebraska. What they fail
to realize, or more likely do realize but just 'forget' to mention, is that
Solich's salary isn't paid by the state with tax money, but by all those season
ticket holders and donors who make Nebraska's athletic department
self-sufficient, and allow the athletic department to actually gives money to
the general university fund rather than take from it. If the situation is
similar at Minnesota, then think of high ticket prices as a way of keeping tax
money from paying for athletics.
