No. 5 Providence Defeats Western Ontario In Exhibition Hockey Action, 6-1

        PROVIDENCE, R.I. --Sophomore Peter Zingoni (Newtown, Conn.) and senior
Peter Fregoe (Massena, N.Y.) each scored two goals to lead the Providence
College Friars to a 6-1 win  over Western Ontario in men's college hockey
exhibition action at PC's Schneider Arena on Saturday, October 6.
        Zingoni (Newtown, Conn.) got the scoring started in the first period when
tipped in a shot from senior Drew Omicioli (West Warwick, R.I.) at the 5:59
mark. The Mustangs' Matt Dzieduszychi tied the contest at 1-1 at the 8:51
mark with a shot that beat PC goalie Nolan Schaefer (Yellow Grass, Sask.).
        Providence senior Marc Suderman (Regina, Sask.) put the Friars ahead for
good at the 13:56 mark of the first period when he scored a shorthanded
tally off an assist from Omicioli.  Fregoe scored the game's next two goals
when he tallied at the end of the first period at 18:30 and then again, 17
seconds into the second period. Fregoe's goals put the Friars up, 4-1, at
the first minutes of the second period.
        Three minutes later, junior Jon DiSalvatore (So. Windsor, Conn.) scored
from sophomore defensemen Regan Kelly (Imperial, Sask.) and Stephen Wood
(Sudbury, Mass.). Zingoni, who opened the scoring, closed the scoring with a
third-period power-play goal at 9:18.
        The Friars' only exhibition contest this season, this game was slowed by a
total of 58 combined penalties for 218 minutes. Western Ontario logged 36
calls for 150 minutes.
        PC's Schaefer played the first two periods and allowed just the single UWO
goal while recording 12 saves. Freshman David Cacciola (Burlington, Mass.)
played the final 20 minutes and made four saves. The Mustangs goaltenders,
Jarrett Rose and Mike D'Alessandro, combined for 35 saves.
        No. 5 Providence opens the season on Friday, October 12 when they face No.
4 Michigan in the first game of the Maverick Stampede in Omaha, Neb. The
Friars will face either Minnesota-Duluth or Nebraska-Omaha on Saturday,
October 13. The Friars' home opener is Friday, October 19 when PC hosts
Sacred Heart at Schneider Arena at 7:00 p.m.
