Has any team ever won the national championship, and not received a first round bye under the current format? What is the record on bye vs. non-bye teams under the current format?

That goes along with my theory I want the tourney to go to 16 teams, too.
However, I think some are getting a little bent out of shape because some
teams are being rewarded for stellar play during the regular season by
recieving a bid as calling it unfair. Heck the MAAC shouldn't have recieved
a bid at all, however, we pretty much dealt with it. It actually sound like
some are experiencing sour grapes about their teams losing to a bye team,
However, SCSU got bit in the rear end by a team that played the night before
so that shot that idea out of the water about fairness.

My next question is about fairness too, should the rest of college hockey
have to cut the number of games they play or have a specific start because
some conferences (MAAC, ECAC) want the rest of the leagues to conform to
their way of thinking. I have been told a proposal is comming this year at
the NCAA meetings. They haven't been a league that long and now they want
to affect the rest of the College hockey teams in the country. Really did
anyone think Mercy hurst was going to end up in the NCAA final Four?
Really...
