#5 St. Cloud State Defeats #4 Minnesota, 6-1

Minneapolis, Minn. -- The #5 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team
(26-8-1, 19-8-0 WCHA) gained a 6-1 win at #4 University of Minnesota on
March 2, thanks to sophomore center Jon Cullen's first collegiate hat trick.

Cullen opened the game's scoring at 12:50 of the first period with an assist
from Ryan Malone. Cullen scored the eventual game winner with his second
goal at 13:22 with assists from Derek Eastman and Keith Anderson. UM scored
their only goal of the game at 17:33 of the first on a short handed goal by
Jordan Leopold. Cullen concluded an amazing first period with his third
goal of the night at 18:41 of the first with a dish from Anderson.

SCSU finished the Gophers off in the third period with three more goals.
The first was charted by Chris Purslow at 2:13, followed by Tyler Arnason's
tally at 2:39. The goal moved Arnason into the team scoring lead with 23
goals this season - the fourth best single-season goal scoring performance
in team history. Of note, Brandon Sampair's assist on the goal was his 33rd
of the season, which ties the team record for most assists in a season.
Jeff Saterdalen also had 33 assists in 1989-90. Malone ended the SCSU
scoring display with a power play goal at 3:55 with assists from Joe Motzko
and Cullen.

SCSU was outshot in the game 38-22, but the incredible play of All-America
candidate Scott Meyer in the nets kept the Huskies out front. Meyer gained
37 saves in the contest, which is a new season-high for him.

The victory also marks the most wins (26) by the Huskies in a single season
since SCSU began playing intercollegiate hockey in 1931-32. The previous
season-high was 25 wins set in 1986-87 and 1934-35. The 19 wins in the WCHA
is another single-season best for the Huskies. SCSU and UM will square off
again on March 3, at the National Hockey Center in St. Cloud. Game time is
slated for 7:05 p.m.
