PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Providence College senior goaltender Boyd Ballard of
Weyburn, Saskatchewan and sophomore goaltender Nolan Schaefer of Yellow
Grass, Saskatchewan were named HOCKEY EAST Co-Defensive Players of the Week
while freshman Regan Kelly of Imperial, Saskatchewan was named HOCKEY EAST
Rookie of the Week on Monday, February 5.
Ballard received his Defensive Player of the Week honor after registering a
career-high 43 saves, including 21 in the third period, in the squad's 4-3
win over Northeastern on February 2.  It marks the third time in Ballard's
career he has earned the Defensive Player of the Week honor.  This season,
he has posted a 6-2-3 record with a 2.79 goals against average and a .908
save percentage.  Ballard is the son of Lyle and Marion Ballard.  Prior to
Providence, he played for the Weyburn Red Wings of the SJHL.
On February 3, Schaefer registered 24 saves while earning his third career
shutout in a 1-0 win over Merrimack.  Schaefer is now tied with former
Friar Mario Proulx for the most shutouts by a PC goaltender in one
season.  It marks the third time this season that he has earned Defensive
Player of the Week honors.  In 15 games this season, Schaefer has
registered a 10-5-1 record with a 1.89 goals against average and a .936
save percentage.  Schaefer is the son of Peter and Tracey Schaefer.  Prior
to attending Providence, Schaefer played for the Nipawin Hawks of the SJHL.
         Kelly was named HOCKEY EAST Rookie of the Week after recording the
second and third goals of his career during the third period of the Friars'
4-3 win at Northeastern.  This season, Kelly has tallied three goals and 14
assists in 22 games.  Kelly is the son of David and Shirley Kelly.  Prior
to attending Providence, Kelly played for the Nipawin Hawks of the SJHL.
Providence, 15-7-4, will return to action on Friday, February 9 versus
second-ranked Boston College at Schneider Arena at 7:00 p.m.
