Letters of intent were mailed Monday to center Dave Shields of
Cochrane, Alberta, and wingers Junior Lessard of St. Joseph deBeauce,
Quebec, and Nick Anderson of Proctor. The official NCAA signing
period began Wednesday.
 
Shields, 21, led Melville of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League
with 36 goals and 41 assists  for 77 points in 49 games. Lessard, 19,
tied a Portage single-season record for goals with 60 and had 48
assists for 108 points in 60 games, placing third in scoring in the
Manitoba Junior Hockey League. He's the first Quebec recruit in UMD
history. Anderson, 20, was the top scorer for Dubuque of the U.S.
Hockey League with 23 goals and 22 assists for 45 points in 44 games.
He's a former Duluth East player.
 
UMD recruits from the USHL who have already signed letters of intent
are Rochester goalie Adam Coole of Duluth (2.63 goals-against
average, .922 save percentage); Omaha forward Josh Miskovich of
Pengilly (two points in 12 games); Rochester forward Andy Sacchetti
of Eveleth (9  goals and 16 assists for 25 points in 53 games); and
Des Moines center Jerrid Reinholz of Ramsey, Minn. (21 goals and 32
assists for 53 points in 57 games.) Also signed is defenseman  Craig
Weller of Calgary in the Alberta Junior Hockey League.
