During last night's ESPN Classic rebroadcast of ABC's 2hour version of the
game, Ken Dryden, who did the color commentary, said the 1980 victory was
greater than the 1960 victory because (1) little was known of any of the teams
in 1960 (the fear factor was lower - the 1960 team had NOT just lost 10-3 to
their opponent) and (2) the Soviets in 1960 were not the quality of the 1960
NHL, but the 1980 Soviets were the equvilent of the 1980 NHL (ie of better quality).

I was a graduate student at Michigan State, and a large group of us were in
Green Bay, Wisc. working on some project. We huddled in our room to listen to
the game on radio, but before that we hit the liquor stores. By the time the
game was over and our evening meeting was to begin, we were all too drunk and
excited to meet, so we told (e.g. pleaded with) the director there was no way
we were going to the meeting but were going to watch the game on TV. He said
okay. I was shocked at how excited I got last night watching a replay of that
game 20 years later. For whatever reason it is still exciting.
