Folks,

BU's rivalry with Cornell had cooled somewhat during the late 70's. During
that time BC and UNH were on the rise and had played some memorable games
with BU, such as the '76 and '78 Beanpot semis and the '77 ECACs. Fans still
got up for Cornell, but more for nostalgia than any immediate impact.

Our favorite cheer then was to sing the opposing goalie's name in that
sing-songy whine that Red Sox fans made famous in '86 against Daryl
Strawberry.

I recall in high school (early '70s) my school was playing a parochial
school in pituitary-ball. The kids from the other school let loose with the
munch cheer (you know, "Munch, munch, munch, the ref is out to lunch"). One
brave fan finished the cheer with "Eat it, ref, eat it". A teacher from the
parochial school waded into the crowd, got into the student's face, and read
him the riot act. (Three metaphors in one sentence, a new HOCKEY-L
record!!). So it is, or was, possible to control fan behavior.

Remember what it was like to be a rebellious college kid. Nowadays, when you
can regularly hear "ass", "suck", and "bitch" on prime-time family
television, kids have to escalate their profanity to appear shocking and
grown up. In my life-time, I believe George Carlin's seven dirty words will
be a regular part of broadcast television. You can already hear them on PBS.
What will the fans chant then?

By the way, do you remember where you were 20 years ago this week?
