Re: the "chant":

Speaking as a long-time BC season ticket holder who is NOT an alum of BC or
BU, I congratulate the BU band director for making the decision to "ban" the
band's playing of the "Eat 'em up" song. The band leader realized it had
gotten out of hand, and didn't want it to seem like the university was
sanctioning the chant. He made it clear that there was nothing he could do
re: the other students/fans doing the chant, so the "chant" will probably
continue. It doesn't bother me (hey, the BC fans have their own obscenities
that they direct at opponents), as long as the school doesn't appear to
sanction it.

Given the Cornell cheer referring to BU, I have to say I appreciate cheers
that insult rivals even when they're not your opponent in the game at hand.
I've noticed the BU faithful doing the same thing, even when BC is not the
opponent. Must be very confusing to the opponents they are actually playing
(I've seen some comments about it on USCHO from UNH fans). I find it very
strange, but, then again, I'm not there.

I know this is pure speculation on my part, but I wonder if a request also
came from the TV station that broadcasts their games. TV-68 recently
changed ownership and is now owned by Paxson Communications, a network that
provides "family-friendly" programming. Maybe someone at HQ saw a BU hockey
broadcast and didn't like it when the "chant" went over their air. Hmmm...
