I've been an advocate for getting rid of the regionals as well.  Here's what
I would do:
 
1) Rank the teams 1-16.
 
2) Top 8 seeds host Bottom 8 seeds in best 2 out of 3 playoff series, repeat
for second round.
 
3) Winners advance to Frozen Four.
 
It's simple, straightforward, and fair.  In other words, a far cry from the
current system.
