This is why I like the Hobey Baker as an award. It goes beyond on-ice prowess
and includes a large amount of credit for off-ice activities. I was surprized
when Brian Holzinger from Bowling Green won, but after reading his complete
bio, it was a deserved award. Focusing on stats would likely cause someone to
pick the wrong winner of an award that is meant to honor a personality.
Remember, Hobey Baker, though good, was not an outstanding hockey player. And
so the award can go to a good though not outstanding hockey player as long as
their off ice accomplishments ARE outstanding.
