The nickname still is the Friars. Can't tell you what became of the
original mascot version. It disappeared several years ago, I'll guess after
the headpiece got dropped one too many times. It was replaced by "Friar
Boy" who is very popular with the kids.
 
Actually, the dalmatian has a long history as a mascot for the school.
