Thank Goodness for the NCAA! Helmet use was mandated by the NCAA partially
because of pressure from the American Medical Association! Of course college
coaches want it off..... so do the players!
 
The rational behind eliminating face masks is better visibility and less
invincibility! No more fogging plastic and poor peripheral vision! The half
shield is no cure all either. Sticks can still get under! Future helmet and
shield technology will certainly have to address improved protection against
eye and head injuries while I think comfort and attractiveness is of paramount
importance to the players. You better believe Bauer, CCM, Jofa, Cooper, etc.
are going to come up with something new! It's good business! Though, we may
never see 100% safer, as long as it's a contact/ collision sport!
 
Toss the head gear and you may find that sticks will go down. But, it's a
great risk to take in the name of competitiveness at any level of the sport!
