02-04-99 ECAC Commish Unveils Preseason Tourney Plans

ECAC ice hockey commissioner Jeff Fanter has confirmed that on Oct. 15 and
16, a new interconference preseason tournament will take place at the
Pepsi Arena in Albany, N.Y. The as-yet unnamed tournament will feature
Rensselaer as host, Boston University, Niagara and a fourth team that is
still to be determined. An official announcement on the event will be
made in two to three weeks.

"This tournament is one of several events that the ECAC will be involved
with over the next two to three years," he said. "Look for more events to
take place like this." The scheduling of the planned tournament is of
interest. It will take place one week after the third annual Ice Breaker
Invitational in Denver, Colo. "This event is not a competing event with
the Ice Breaker," said Fanter. "It is an event to raise college hockey to
a greater level." Other events under consideration include some similar
to the ECAC-Hockey East Holiday Doubleheader this past December in
Hartford, Conn.

02-03-99 New Rochester-Area Tourney In Works

The four college hockey teams in the greater Rochester (N.Y.) area -- RIT,
Hobart, Brockport anf Geneseo -- will square off in a tournamaent at the
start of next season. The tournament will be modeled after the highly
successful Chase Bank Basketball Tournament, which involves the eight
basketball teams in the area. Organizers for the proposed hockey tourney
and Chase Bank are reportedly close to a sponsorship deal, as well.

Games will be played at Geneseo on Oct. 29, 1999, and at RIT the next day.
The RIT Tournament, which has ordinarily taken place that weekend, will be
moved to later in the season. One possible side benefit of that move would
be to allow RIT to draw on teams from the ECAC East and MIAC as well.
