A couple of factual corrections to Dan Doucette's post:

You mean I-A (the big time) I-AA (Patriot League, Yankee Conference et
al) has a playoff system.
 
> Hockey's conference championships are really like more games in the season,

Conference playoffs do not count towards NCAA (or ECAC, or Ivy) game
limits.  They do, however, count the same as any other games for NCAA
tournament selection.
 
And one opinion:

Gee, then we could also have people saying "I hope my team doesn't
make the NCAAs"?  No thanks.
