The traditional way for New Jersey hockey players to play D1 hockey is through
the Prep School route and not NJ high school hockey which is not strong (let
Seton Hall Prep play Canterbury etc). Present NJ D1 players (just to name a
few) Matt Scorsone and JR Prestifillipo (who went to Seton Hall for one year)
of Harvard both were at Hotchkiss; Dartmouth's Dave Risk went to Lawrence
Academy after one year at Morristown; Dennis Peleia of Quinnipiac went to
Canterbury after Morris Knolls; Paul Giblin of Brown went to Hotchkiss; Leigh
Dean of Providence went to Northwood; and Army's Brody Howatt (Randolph and
then Choate) and Corey Winer (Morris Knolls and then Choate). An interesting
bit of trivial trivia- Morris Knolls High School a New Jersey Public School-
has had four D1 players in the 90s- Leigh Dean; Dennis Pelaia; and the 2 Winer
brothers at Army

The Star Ledger of Newark had an article discussing the dilemma for NJ players
(by the way some have gone the USHL route like Phil Eboli of Vermont [Jon Sorg
of Branchville another UVM man]) . Notable exceptions - Jim Dowd NCAA scoring
champ at LSSU and an NHLer and Derek Maguire of Delbarton who excelled at
Harvard. My apologies to any NJ D1 players I omitted.
