The playing of the National Anthem before games dates back to either
the 1st or 2nd World War when it was done as a sign of respect and
patriotism for those serving their country.

It is one of the few meaningful things in that vein that continue
today, a sign of respect for both Canadian and US citizens.

The best was when Father Gary used to sing the Canadian Anthem at RPI
in French (and I went to Union)

I like Deron's idea, too. Display the national flags for all the members on
your team.

As to anthems, it is a dumb idea to play the National Anthem before all
sporting events. What has the anthem to do with the event? And its played
so often now it meaningfulness has become diluted. Thus, I would scrap it
altogether.
