According to what I've read, if the teams split the first two games and the
score is tied at the end of the 3rd period of the 3rd game, then they should
resurface the ice after the 3rd period and go right to 20 minute overtimes,
playing through to the next weekend if necessary. The 3rd game of a
first-to-three-points series certainly meets the NCAA's "tournament games
where a winner needs to be decided for advancement purposes" criteria.

OK now that everybody has weighed in, I have a question just for the ECAC
fans, because our league seems to be the only one that does it this way
come playoff time.

I can understand the 5 min OT in ECAC playoff games #1 and #2 because it
is a race to 3 points, not 2 wins like the WCHA, CCHA, and HEA. But what
happens if game #3 is tied after 60 minutes? Do we play 5 + 20,20,etc.
or do we go to 20 minute OT's directly?
