Renewing an old tradition
 
It's been years since anyone has seen the Taconite trophy that was awarded
to the winner of the UMD/Minnesota series.  Minnesota got tired of having
to bring it out to games "just in case" UMD won the season series (Little
Brown Jug syndrome) I think I've seen it once, but I'd be hard pressed to
describe it.  Perhaps a new one should be made from the taconite pellets
found on the Mesabe & Iron Range railroad grade.  (Taconite pellets contain
iron ore and resemble deer droppings)  Since the state now has 4 division 1
teams perhaps it is time to resurrect it and give it to the team with the
best instate winning percentage.  Something along the lines of a year long
Bean Pot.
 
I thought at the beginning of the season the Minnesota Gophers would lose
the trophy and have to fess up that they lost it on Lake Minnetonka during
a pickup game in the middle of winter (It could have been used as an ice
auger for fishing). As luck has it, even though they ended up 6th in the
WCHA and behind both UMD and St. Cloud, UMN showed that they still have
bragging rights to the states best hockey team (excluding Duluth
East-Minnesota high school state champs)
