My take on the situation from reading Hockey-L and the
local paper:
 
(A) UM's Bobby Hayes is in the box serving a minor.
(B) UM's John Madden is called for a delayed minor.
(C) Before Michigan can gain control of the puck, UM's
Sean Peach dislodges the net.  (A trick he learned from
Notre Dame.)  Referee Roger Graff rules a penalty shot
for Peach's actions.
 
These are independent events.  Hayes is still in the box.
Madden enters the box to serve his two minutes.  OSU
takes the penalty shot and scores.  The remainder of
Hayes' penalty is wiped out.  ERROR!  Regardless of
the result of the penalty shot, OSU should have been on
a 5-on-3 power play following it.  Graff's allowing Hayes
out of the box was a blatant mistake.
 
Again...this is my take, fwiw.
 
And, yes, Matt Shegos and Steve Piotrowski ref nearly
100% of the CCHA's TV games so viewers outside of
CCHA-land do not truly appreciate how poor the CCHA
officiating actually is.  Matt and Pi are the best we have,
by a long shot.  As for miking the ref, most find that entertaining.
Although Pi seems to talk the most, I get a bigger kick
out of listening to Matt and Mark Shegos.  No one ever
said that refs don't have a sense of humor, and these
guys certainly do.  (Matt also gives the best explanations
for his calls.  He'll look at a player and tell him exactly
why the call was made, something I enjoy hearing as a
spectator, too.)
