Michigan clinches its fourth consecutive CCHA regular season
title with the whitewashing. After taking a 3-0 lead at even strength,
UM's final five tallies came on the power play. Bill Muckalt's goal
was scored on a 6-on-3 delayed penalty call. Michigan had a
5-on-3 advantage when LSSU goaltender John Grahame cross
checked Warren Luhning. Marty Turco went to the bench and
UM maintained control for twenty seconds or so before Muckalt
ripped a blast past Grahame. For the evening, UM was 5-for-9
with the man advantage and LSSU was 0-for-9. There was a
short ceremony following the game to honor the CCHA champs
and an even shorter ceremony prior to the game honoring UM
senior defenseman Blake Sloan, who received college hockeys'
Humanitarian Award. A hearty congrats to Blake. Fwiw, this was
the second consecutive meeting in which UM scored five second
period goals on LSSU. I don't think I can say enough about UM's
fourth line of Justin Clark, Bobby Hayes and Dale Rominski, all
sophomores. They only netted one ppg, but they dominated
the Laker zone almost every time they were on the ice.

Statistical note: The win was the 88th of Marty Turco's career,
moving him into second place all-time in Division I behind
Steve Shields' 111. It was also the 10th solo shutout of Turco's
career. (He's participated in a half dozen or more combined
shutouts as well.) I've seen the 10 blankings referred to as an
NCAA record, but that seems too low. Does anyone have a
good idea what the record is?

As with Friday, eight goals are scored...but this time they're
divided evenly among the teams. UM continues to click on
the power play, going 3-for-8. LSSU was 1-for-9. John Madden
scored the game-tying goal on what was essentially a rush
during 4-on-4 play, but Ted Laviolette came out of the penalty
box just in time to make it a shorthanded goal, the 22nd of
Madden's career. All four UM goals were milestones, with
Muckalt, Legg and Madden getting their 20th and Ritchlin
his 10th. Michigan now has six forwards with 20 or more goals
through 35 games and likely has a seventh in Warren Luhning:

NAME YR GP G A PTS
Brendan Morrison SR 35 24 46 70
John Madden SR 34 20 33 53
Bill Muckalt JR 28 20 28 48
Mike Legg SR 33 20 28 48
Matt Herr JR 35 27 20 47
Jason Botterill SR 34 24 16 40
Warren Luhning SR 35 17 18 35

Entering the final weekend of the regular season, Michigan
also boasts the top three scorers in CCHA play:

NAME YR GP G A PTS
Brendan Morrison SR 25 17 28 45
Mike Legg SR 25 17 25 42
John Madden SR 25 17 24 41

Mike Legg is, rather quietly among the media, having an
outstanding senior season...particularly in the second half.

The Wolverines ran their mouths a little too much on Saturday
night, and referee Matt Shegos was apparently over-sensitive
as he whistled three different UM skaters for 10-minute
misconducts.

One other noteworthy CCHA stat note: Ferris State senior
defenseman Andy Roach was held scoreless in the final
two games at Fairbanks, thus falls short in his bid to become
the CCHA's all-time goal scoring leader among defensemen.
Scott Paluch's record of 36 appears safe for another year.
Roach finishes his career with 35. BGSU senior Kelly Perrault
unofficially has 32 entering the final weekend.

Last, but not least, Yost Ice Arena was graced this weekend
by the presence of USA Today's Jon Barkan and former LSSU
and now USA Hockey dignitary Scott Monaghan. Once dubbed
"The Michigan Anti-Christ," I believe UM improves to 3-2-1 with
JB in the house over the previous two seasons.
