Hi everyone. Before I get to the game recap, I wanted everyone to know
that I will be photographing for the UND homepage when the hockey team is
at home. To see the photos, go to the following:

Anyway....
UND desperately needed a victory on Saturday after the 5-2 loss on
Friday. The best indication that I would enjoy this game much more then
the debaucle on Friday was right off the bat when Marilyn Manson's song
"Beautiful People" was played unedited during the warm-ups. :-)
Anyway, UND had much more intensity tonight and actually showed
signs of life throughout the game. The first period saw the Sioux with a
3-0 lead with less than 8 minutes left, thanks to goals by Pivetz,
Henderson, and David Hoogsteen. UW was able to get on the board late
with a goal by Peterson. By the end of the first, the score was 3-1 and
UND had outshot UW by a 12 to 21 margin.
The second period, the floodgates opened. After the Badger's
Bradley scored in the beginning of the period, UND answered with four
goals in seven minutes. The last three of the four were power play
goals. The four goals for UND were scored by Defauw, Calder, Kallay and
Panzer. However, UW was able to answer with two powerplay goals of their
owntoward the end of the second. The score was now 7 to 4.
By the third period, the game had become more chippy. Penalties
were fairly abundent. UND socred one more time and UW scored twice. The
final score: UND - 8, UW - 6. Wisconsin did outshoot UND 4 to 9 in the
final period.

Quick Comments:

UND was 5 for 6 on the powerplay while UW was 2 for 4.

The Sioux were without their captain due to a bad shoulder. He is expected to
play in next week's series.

Well, someone told the Sioux to lift the puck! Daubenspeck seemed to
have a hard time stopping the shots due to the fact that most of the
shots were not at his feet. Kvalevog for UND also had anything but a
stellar game. However, several of the UW goals were the fault of the
defense and not his. This included one UW goal where a UW foreward was
all alone next to the UND blueline. A pass from the opposite end of the
ice went directly to him. The end result: a UW goal.

Several other things made it "one of those nights":
-At the beginning of the game, one of the UND students had a badger with
a rope around its neck hanging from a hockey stick. The student had the
stick hanging over the glass during the warm-ups. This prompted one of
the UW players to swat at it, knock the badger off and send it flying to
the opposite end of the ice.

-During the second period, someone who a group of us have dubbed the
heckler, was almost was kicked out. For those of you who have been here
before, he is the individual who sits five rows back from the opposition
and next to the railing (so he has a perfect seat to heckle). Mid-way
through the second, after a fairly good fight had broken out, someone
directly dehind the heckler throw a soda container at the UW bench. The
players told the officials that the heckler had thrown it at them. He
responded by yelling at them and flexing for them.

-The Pit Crew (AKA the rowdy group at UND) and Daubenspeck showed their
animosity toward eachother. By the end of the game, Daubenspeck started
making crazy gestures toward the Pit Crew section which made the students
yell at him that much more.

UW almost made the game very interesting. With around three minutes left,
the puck went into the Sioux net but due to a high-sticking call it was
ruled no good. If that had counted, UW might have pulled out the tie or
the win.

UND goes down to face CC next week.
