That game was played in the Joe Louis Arena on a Friday night. The game went
into several overtimes and was won by RPI on a power play goal by John
Carter (later of
the Boston Bruins) that came about from a what I consider a marginal penalty
call.
To their credit, I never heard a single UMD fan at the game (and there were
thousands) complain about getting screwed by the refs. In the other games,
on Thursday night, BC lost to Providence in OT, in the consolation game, UMD
beat BC by 1 goal (possibly in OT). The only non-one goal game was in the final
where RPI beat PC 2-0 in a real close game. The only downside to the tournament
was low attendence. All year long, RPI was alternating with Michigan State
as #1 nationally. It was shaping up to be an MSU-RPI final and tickets were
impossible
to come by. Then PC travelled to MSU for the quarterfinals and eliminated
MSU and
all of a sudden 10,000 tickets to the Joe were available.

The player you were referring to must be Darren Puppa who jumped to the NHL
following
that season, foregoing several years of eligibility. It was a difficult
decision on his part but history has proved he made a good choice. Also
jumping to the NHL after
that year was Adam Oates, a junior at the time. Even though he gave up his
senior year
Oates still hold the RPI record for career assists, and is in the top 3 for
total points.
