Game Summary:
RPI's Gardiner will have a long trip back to NY as his 5 min major
penalty allowed UML to score twice late in the second period.
RPI had some good pressure on UML goalie Marty Fillion in the first
period, but he held the fort util UML woke up in the second. Freshman
Chris Bell started the scoring in the second on a nice backhand shot
from the slot that beat RPI goalie Joel Laing top corner. Marc Salsman
got his 5th of the year, a PPG due to Gardiner's 5 min major, by stuffin
home a rebound from a Neil Donovan shot. Bell's second of the night
came on the same power play, likewise stuffing home a rebound from a
Chris Libett shot. Lowell didn't really sit on its lead in the third
period, but ended up killing off a few unwanted penalties, including a
2-man advantage for RPI.
In an interview after the game, UML coach Tim Whitehead said that he
was pleased with his team tonight. They played a solid game, with the
exception of still taking too many stupid penalties, something that they
are always trying to cut-down. He was very happy with his power play,
especially on the 5 min major they had, scoring twice, and his penalty
killing units, blanking RPI 0-10.
We also interviewed UML goalie Marty Fillion. He seemed excited and
modest, downplaying his shutout performance tonight, and saying thanks
to his defense, who made some diving blocks and kept the rebounds away
from RPI. He said that the rust was pretty much gone, something very
noticable in the Merrimack series last weekend.
UML travels to West Point this weekend and then a showdown with Maine
next weekend.
