As an Ohio resident and college hockey backer, I'm totally
embarrassed by the show that has been put up in Cincinnati. As if the
officiating gaffe in the 2nd Overtime wasn't enough punishment for all
fans, the condition of the ice at the Riverfront Coliseum has precluded
fans nationally from seeing the kind of fast paced(and for that matter,
timely) hockey that would help the sport nationally.
Could someone in the Cincinnati area please explain who was
responsible for the ice problems today? Was it a simple equipment failure
in pipes or cooling, or was the ice made poorly? As we all know, to some
extent, ice-making is an art. This in mind, who was charged with that job
at the coliseum this week? That building has not hosted a regular team
since the WHA Stingers(defunct 1978 I believe), and has only sporadically
had to make ice for events like Ice Capades in those nearly 20 years. The
ice at Miami University and the Cincinnati Gardens(home of the IHL
Cyclones), both nearby, has always been satisfactory and I wonder if any of
that expertise was utilized?
Speaking of the Cyclones, what was the attendance for the night
game? The 11K+ drawn by the superb day game is only slightly more than
the IHL team draws on a typical weekend sell-out. There seems to have a
been a lack of promotion of a major event if tickets are still available
for walk-up today.
After today's shenanigans, I'm not too sad that I missed the
semis on account of classes. I can only hope that we see a better show in
person on saturday.
