Coach Larry Pedrie of UIC who always seems to have something up his sleeve
tried something interesting in the second period against Univ of Mich. Down
5-0 after playing UM to a draw in the first period, UIC found itself with a 2
man advantage for over one minute and one of the penalties was a 5 minute
major (this was after no penalties were called in the first period either).
Pedrie called time out and pulled his goalie for a 6 on 3 man advantage. In
many years of hockey, this is something I've never seen. Since we were
destroying UIC, I was looking forward to seeing UM keep UIC out of the net.
I've never seen such slow passing than I did by UIC. They should have been
whipping the puck around for the open shot, instead they seemed to wait for
some UM player to cover each pass. 33 seconds later John Madden intercepted
a pass and shot the puck down the whole ice into the empty net - his seventh
short handed goal of the season. Pedrie then put his goalie back on the ice
and UIC still could not score with a 5on 3 advantage.

Pedrie was also the coach who pulled his goalie for the last 23 minutes of a
game last year and outscored the other team during that stretch. (at least I
think he outscored them, I think it was against Western Michigan).

Botterill was the number one star of the game, then Morrison and Bubba
Berenzweig. The fourth line of Hayes, Herr, and Clark had six points (2
goals and 4 assists). They were very good. Hayes had another goal whistled
off. On a drive to the goalie, he tried to push it between the goalie's
legs. The goalie sat down and the ref thought he had sat on the puck and
blew the whistle. However, the puck kept going and ended in the back of the
net. It's lucky this was not a close game, because that was a horrible call.
