COMMENTS:
UNH comes away with a solid, if unspectacular win against BC, sparked by
tough defense and opportunistic scoring. BC can't get the equalizer late
in the third period after goaltender Greg Taylor leaves the game with
a 10-minute misconduct after he fires the puck in a fit of anger into the
UNH bench after UNH scores their 4th goal. Taylor is restrained (barely)
by an assistant coach after he is routed down the tunnel and toward the
locker room. (He does get frustrated at times and loses his temper.)

Joe Harney returns at defense for BC, and Jamie O'Leary is back in the
lineup after his bout with mono. David Wainwright misses his first game
all year, and Toby Harris also sits.

FIRST PERIOD
Both teams have decent opportunities in the period, but UNH is able to
break through first when Nickulas pots one from in front. The second UNH
goal is a shorthanded one; UNH uses their strong penalty-killing and
forechecking to keep the puck in the BC end until Muir can score. BC has
several good chances that Cavicchi plays well, and misses an opportunity
late when Brad Carlson can't poke home a loose puck at the left side of
the net on a rebound of a Haggerty shot on a 2-on-1 break.

SECOND PERIOD
I didn't see Eric Boguiniecki on the ice at the start of the second period
and thought there might be a problem with him, but he plays the second
half of the period and looks okay. BC carries the play at the start of
the period with more aggressive forechecking, and it almost pays off when
Jim Krayer steals the puck in the zone and fires a shot past Cavicchi,
only to have it hit the crossbar and come back out. O'Leary tries a
wraparound at the 12:00 mark, but Cavicchi makes a great cover and blocks
the attempt at the post. UNH gradually takes over the momentum and starts
to dominate play in the second part of the period, but BC gets the only
goal on a strange play. Haggerty was forced to wait at the blue line to
let his linemates clear the zone. As they cleared, he took a long shot
from the blue line, and it deflected off a defenseman past Cavicchi for
a surprising goal that made it UNH 2 - BC 1.

THIRD PERIOD
The play went back and forth for much of the first 10 minutes, both teams
trying to play strong defense. BC was forced to take more chances to try
to even the score, and gave up some counterattacks. BC finally ties it at
2 when Don Chase is able to poke his own rebound under Cavicchi at the
left post. (Chase has been on a goal-scoring tear lately, with 11 goals
in his last 8 games.) UNH goes back ahead just a couple of minutes later
when a BC defender falls at center ice and UNH gets a 2-on-1 break. Poole
makes a nice feed to Nickulas who hits the shot high over Taylor's shoulder.
The game winning goal is scored by Mark Mowers when Flinton hits him with
a long pass at the blue line and he breaks in clear, also scoring on a
high shot above Taylor's glove. 3 of the 4 UNH goals were scored with
high shots. Taylor, upset at something (either himself or his porous
defense, which has given up a lot of breakaways this year), sends the puck
to the UNH bench. After they complain, Taylor gets the misconduct penalty
and loses his cool. Luckily, with the Beanpot coming up Monday, he was
restrained before he could collect the disqualification as well. Freshman
Mike Correia finishes the game in the net for BC. David Hymovitz gets one
of the goals right back when he beats Cavicchi cleanly on a sharp shot from
the right side, but UNH holds on to pick up the 5 points.

BC could have been distracted by the Beanpot final coming up Monday, but
they played reasonably well against a strong UNH team. UNH shows once
again how a strong defense can control a game, and they have enough shooters
to be able to score goals. Heinke seems a stronger goaltender than
Cavicchi, but Trent played pretty well tonight, I thought, with only the
last BC goal a relatively weak one. This game could have gone to BC with
a little luck (a post was hit and the final two UNH goals were results of
defensive breakdowns; change any one of those and the result would have
been different.) UNH repeatedly sent forecheckers deep into the BC zone
and bottled them up; BC has problems transitioning to offense. UNH, on
the other hand, has the occasional weakness when they let the other team's
offense wheel and deal in center ice and the offensive zone. It didn't
hurt them much against BC, but might cause problems come playoff time.

Taylor's temper tantrum shows that he still lets his emotions run away
sometimes, though it has been a frustrating year for him. It would be
nice to see a little more maturity; his team needs him to be a leader
despite being only a sophomore. Several other BC players showed tempers
on the bench as well; it is a mixed blessing, as the emotion that enables
them to play more aggressively and has improved their play lately also
can be pushed over the edge if not controlled. To their credit, they are
not taking the stupid and retaliatory penalties they took early in the
season and have played much better as a result.

The game had a much better attendance than I was expecting; I don't think
UNH is THAT big a draw, and some of the regulars were missing (Beanpot
burnout?) Maybe it was one of the only games in town; Channels 4, 5, 7,
68, and New England Cable News all had cameras at the game getting
highlights. NECN's Mike Adams attended for a while, and former BC coach
Len Ceglarski was also at the game.

BC next has BU in the Beanpot championship game on Monday, and has their
final home game next Friday against Merrimack.
