MSU's sleepwalking routine continues as the Spartans blow a 2-goal lead and a
golden opportunity to move into a tie for second place by falling to the
Miami Redskins. Not a pretty game for either team, but the Redskins pull into
a tie for third with MSU on the heels of the 3-2 OT victory.

6,453 sounded like 64.53 in Munn tonight, as the crowd was its usual somber
self. (There were some actually leaving as the OT started.) Some of the 64
(in fact most of them) seemed to be cheering for Miami. Spartans opened up
a 2-goal lead on the strength of a power play goal by Rem Murray and a goal
scored on a delayed penalty by defenseman Chris Slater from, of all places,
the slot.

Miami crept to within one on a shorthanded goal by Dan Carter, which he banked
off the right post from the left wing after Alban had essentially cut him off
from everything else. Spartans could never muster a sustained attack in the
period.

The Redskins tied it on a goal by Andreev which was precipitated by Alban
coming out of the net attempting to clear a loose puck. Spartans once again
did not seem to be able to muster a long attack until late in the period,
when most of their attempted shots were blocked by Miami defensemen. Thuss
ddi make a nice save on Guolla on a give-and-go from Sean Berens somewhat
late in the period.

The OT did not start well for MSU, as Alban came out of the net to play a puck
rolling along the top of the boards. As the puck came behind the net, it
dropped off the boards and to a waiting Redskin (I believe it was Carter, but
don't quote me) who hit the inside of the left post. The goal light did come
on, but referee Shegos waived it off, saying the puck did not cross the line
(from my angle, it was tough to tell, but Shegos was somewhat out of position,
being further up ice). It was a tough call to make. The Redskins ended up
winnning on a breakaway goal by Kevin Adams with a little over one minute to
go in OT.

The Spartans lose an opportunity to move into a tie with Bowling Green, who
got smacked all over the UP tonight by Lake Superior in a 7-2 rout. Instead,
they now find themselves tied with Miami with two games in hand on the Red-
skins (which, if MSU plays like it did in the last two periods and in OT
tonight, won't make a difference). In other CCHA action, Michigan held a
4-3 lead on UIC early in the third and Notre Dame had defeated Ohio State in
the battle for ninth place and the chance to avoid playing UAF on March 7 by
a 5-1 final.

The Spartans must now regroup quickly, as it is the same two tomorrow night
at Munn. Mike Buzak should make the start for Michigan State and Tony Tuz-
zolino will also don the Green and White after serving his one-game suspension
for a fighting major in the loss to Michigan. It should be interesting to
see whether Ron Mason continues the jumbling of lines that he employed tonight,
putting Murray on a line with Carter and Watt, Guolla with Sylvester and Berens, and Suk with Albers and Crane (only the third line remained "intact," with
Clifford dressing for Tuzzolino and skating with Keyes and Clarke). Whatever
it was, it didn't work that well. And it found the Spartans winless in their
last three, and in a sense reeling. How they right the ship remains to be seen.
