The Minnesota Daily of 3 April 1991 printed the AP article that has been
referred to in other postings.  I will post the full article here in the
interest of avoiding needless speculation as to its contents.  I do this
reluctantly, as I do not wish to call unfavorable attention to Maine's
hockey program, which is one of the classiest to be found anywhere.  With
that disclaimer in mind, here it is:

MAINE PUCKSTERS TO BE DISCIPLINED FOLLWING CHARGES
   Orono, Maine (AP) -- Three University of Maine hockey players will be
disciplined for their arrest in St. Paul, Minn., on charges of assaulting
a Michigan man after the team's 5-3 loss to Northern Michigan in the NCAA
final four.
   Matt Martin, 19, Chuck Texeira, 20, and Eric Fenton, 21, were arrested
for misdemeanor assault.  Security guards at the Radisson Hotel, where the
Maine team was staying, called police at 2 a.m. Friday for help in breaking
up a fight, authorities said.
   On Thursday afternoon, Maine's loss to Northern Michigan eliminated the
hockey team from the tournament.
   Capt. Robert Gray of the St. Paul Police Department said the three players
told police they were invited to the room at the hotel by a woman.
   Kit Michael Kunkel, 23, of Marquette, Mich., told police the three players
"jumped him after they were asked to leave" the room.
   "Words were exchanged and a punch was thrown by one of the suspects," Gray
said.  "Then all three of them took him (Kunkel) to the floor and there were
more punches before security officers and others in the room could pull the
suspects off him."
   Kunkel suffered a bloody nose and a cut on his left eye, Gray said.
   University of Maine coach Shawn Walsh, contacted Monday night, said the
three players were released from jail late Friday morning and each agreed to
pay a $200 fine within two months.
   Walsh said he decided the players should spend the night in jail rather
than be bailed out immediately.
   "I wanted our players to be classy and they weren't," Walsh said.  "There
was an unfortunate incident."
   "I didn't want to get them out," he added.  "I didn't like what they did
to the program."
   The three players returned to Maine with the team Friday afternoon.
   Texeira, a right wing from Waston, Mass., and Fenton, a center from South
Portland, did not play in the loss to Northern Michigan.  But Martin, a
freshman defenseman from Hamden, Conn., started.
   Walsh, who met with the team Monday night, said he will take disciplinary
action against the players.  But he declined to say how they would be punished.
   "I don't like to wash our laundry in public," he said.
   Athletic director Kevin White also said, "Punitive action will occur.  Such
action will occur internally."
