When the NCAA selection committee announced the seedings for this year's
tournament, they let us in on what formula was followed. Quoting from the
St. Paul Pioneer Press of March 12, "A mathematical formula based on record
and strength of schedule -- record counting for 20 percent, opponents'
record and record of the opponents' opponents each for 40 percent -- was
used to select the 11 teams. The 12th, Alaska-Anchorage, gained automatic
entry as the best independent team."
I would like to suggest that the NCAA selection committee announce before
next season which formula will be used in seeding the teams for the 1992
NCAA tournament. Rather than announcing the results of a weekly poll of
committee members, the cumulative results of the formula could be released.
This would remove any doubt over how the selection process works, and
eliminate disputes over seedings. Any arguments could be directed to
modifying and improving the formula for the next season. Over time, the
formula might evolve to the point where it works nearly as well as Keith
Instone's TCHCR.
