On the Rankings This Week ...

- Please note, as relatively few games have been played, the
rankings are in quite a state of flux. Though this is the
first HEAL ratings of the season, I've included last week's
  rankings for comparison.

- UNH moved from 2nd to 1st with 2 wins over #46 Mass Lowell.
What this report does not show is that UNH's rating went down.
In fact, most of the top-ten team ratings decreased this week
(exceptions: North Dakota, Wisconsin, Lake Superior).

- HEA has the best overall league ranking, yet 3 weeks ago the
leaders were ECAC and WCHA. This will settle down once the
holiday tournaments conclude, as the remaining schedule is
  predominantly league games.

- Northeastern was in the top-ten for 1 day after beating Maine
on Friday and Saturday. Unfortunately for them, Lake Superior
and Ohio State won Sunday games, adjusting the rankings to
  what you see above.

On this ranking ...

This ranking uses games played by NCAA Division I teams eligible for
consideration to the NCAA Division I Men's Ice Hockey Championships.
Specifically excluded this season are the two Division II teams from
the MAAC (Bentley and Mercyhurst) and the three Division II teams from
the CHA (Alabama-Huntsville, Bemidji State and Findlay).

On "The Heal Point System" ...

The Heal Point System is used to rank secondary schools in Maine in
several sports. The Heal Point System was developed circa December 1948
by Durwood Heal to rank Maine secondary school basketball teams.

On the Maine secondary school calculation ...

"P.I." stands for "Preliminary Index". "P.I." is calculated for each
team by giving a team 40 points for each win and 20 points for each tie,
and then dividing by the number of scheduled games. Minimum "P.I." is
1.00.

"T.I." stands for "Tournament Index" and is used to rank the teams.
"T.I." is calculated for each team by summing the "P.I." of the
opponents for each win, one half the "P.I." for each tie, then dividing
by the number of games scheduled and then multiplying by 10.

Note: This Division I college hockey "Heal Point System" ranking uses
the number of games played instead of the number of games scheduled.
Since all games in Division I college hockey are normally played,
there is no difference between this and the traditional Heal Point
System at end of season and this method produces better preliminary
   results.

Game scores for this ranking have been provided by US College Hockey
Online, sometimes supplemented by other sources. USCHO's composite of
all Division I men's ice hockey games is available at

      http://www.uscollegehockey.com/

in the section marked Men's Division I schedules.
