On Wednesday, May 15th, 2024, UMS:IT Data Center Operations Staff will initiate a data migration from our current aging Netapp storage system to a new platform. Summary:
Campus firewalls will be upgraded. Minimal service disruption is expected as firewalls are in redundant pairs.
This is a minor security update to address CVE-2024-2961.
This will impact services at:
University of Maine University of Maine Machias Campus Darling Marine Center University of Southern Maine University of Southern Maine Gorham Campus Lewiston Auburn Center University of Maine at Farmington University of Maine at Augusta University of Maine at Augusta Bangor Campus Rumford Center Rockland Center Ellsworth Center Brunswick Center Brunswick Naval Air Station East Millinocket
A fiber break between Augusta and Waterville caused a momentary service outage for a portion of users on the UMS and MSLN network this morning at approximately 9:15am. Network services failed over to and are currently running on alternate paths. The cause of the break is still under investigation, however no additional service interruptions are anticipated at this time. Updates will be provided when available.

Summary:
A series of firewall changes will be applied to help alleviate resource contention that was the cause of a service outage discovered at 4:00 AM today as a near-term fix ahead of larger upgrade efforts later this spring (TBD).
Power to the equipment in Belfast has been restored and all affected sites are now back in service. The issue appears to have been caused by a problematic transfer back to commercial power. Technicians are currently en route to investigate further to avoid a recurrence.

The Belfast network equipment is once again offline, which will cause an outage for the Rockland Center as well as multiple schools and libraries connected there. The cause is under investigation, however at this time failure of backup power due to fuel exhaustion is unfortunately the prime suspect as commercial power is known to be out at this location. Updates will be provided as available.
Reliable generator backup power is now back in service in Belfast, so additional network outages related to power outages at this location are not anticipated.
Thank you.

Commercial power has been stable for several hours and therefore previously affected network services have also been stable. Work to restore generator capability is ongoing, so although at present we are still vulnerable to extended outages (battery backup for limited outages is in place), at this time we do not anticipate further outages. An update will be provided when generator capability is fully restored, or if there is any other change of status regarding this issue.
Unfortunately, commercial power has been lost again at this location prior to completion of the required generator servicing, and as a result network services as outlined earlier are again down. Generator service work is still ongoing, until that is complete network services dependent on this location may experience intermittent outages coinciding with availability of commercial power. Additional updates will be provided as available.
Power has been restored to the affected equipment, and as such network services impacted by the power outage have likewise been restored. Work to improve reliability of backup power at this location is continuing.

Earlier today some suspected faulty equipment was replaced on the optical network. Careful evaluation since the replacement confirms that the problem is now resolved. The workaround for these three campuses is still in place and will remain so until later this evening to avoid any possible disruptions caused by removing it. An additional notification will be sent when the workaround is removed.
A workaround has been applied that should eliminate the packet loss issue for affected users. The root issue is still being worked on, and further updates will be provided as available. Notification will also be sent when the problem is resolved and the workaround is removed.
Thank you.

We are currently investigating a packet loss issue that started at approximately 1:30pm today, impacting UMFK, UMPI, and UMM. An optical path issue is suspected and we are currently engaging our optical support channels to investigate that. At present we do not have an ETA for repair. More information will be provided when available.
This will go over 12PM, however there is no impact at this time to services. If services become affected an update message will be sent in this thread.

The primary LDAP server has problems with its database requiring that it be shut down and its database compacted. This should take about 15 minutes. During this time LDAP will continue to function on the replica servers, but no changes will be made. The major impact of this is that password changes will not be reflected until after this emergency maintenance is completed.

Summary: Discovered an issue where the UM (Orono) APs are not being load balanced across wireless controller processes correctly, causing some APs to lose connectivity to the controller for ~30 sec roughly every few hours. This needs to be fixed in a maintenance window as the fix is more disruptive than the problem.
We have been made aware of issues with calls dropping or not being able to be completed. This is due to a major service disruption within our telephony provider's network due to a broken fiber span. There is currently no ETA on a resolution. More information will be provided as it becomes available.

Network infrastructure was restored at approx 8am save an ongoing wireless-eduroam service issue that's being worked on. We were unable to identify a root cause for the issue other than knowing the core USM LAN router was negatively impacted by a traffic (appeared to be a loop) event that began at 3:14am. The DC infrastructure is all restored as well and sysAdmins may still be reviewing individual server systems.

Campus firewall upgrades will be performed for the following:
UM (Machias and Darling Marine Center locations only) UMF UMA (Augusta, Bangor, and Centers) UMPI UMFK
This is a minor software update for routine bug fix and security updates.
Users may experience brief disruption of service during the maintenance window but are generally not expected to see loss of service for more than 3 seconds.
