I am writing to make sure Maine libraries are aware of the new Copyright Claims Board (CCB).
The Copyright Claims Board opened for business Thursday, June 16. This is the mechanism established by the CASE Act<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CASE_Act> to field copyright infringement claims without having to go to federal court. While libraries and archives may opt-out of the process (opt-outs include library/archive employees’ activities during the course of their work), anyone who is found guilty through the CCB tribunal could face fines up to $30,000 per infringement.

Just wanted to give everone a "heads"up on a great program we had last saturday. Liza Gardner Walsh (author and school librarian) from Camden visited us and had the children enthralled with her "Fairy House Construction" program. We had an overflowing crowd of kids that learned about fairies, how to attract fairies, and explained to them the rules of the forest. They all made their own fairy house out of wood, sticks, and various items found in the woods. The adults loved it too! She is highly recommended! You can find info on her website lizagardnerwalsh.com.

Good Morning all- I have been working in batches to get all of the renewal invoices sent out this year, but I have been woefully slow and behind schedule.
The last of the batches should go out today or tomorrow at the latest. I know this is late in the fiscal year for most libraries so my apologies for being so late with these. I'm sorry for any budgetary or timing issues I'm causing libraries.
We received one of our DVD series back on the van today, but one of the two discs is missing. The series is Brother and Sisters, Season 2. Disc one is not in the case. I can't see where it came from, but if you remember seeing it, and you recall who borrowed it, we'd love to get the disc back in its case ;).

Hello, I just got a call from a man who says he is at Riverview Psychiatric Hospital in Augusta, Maine. The library director has got calls from him before and this is my second one. Each time, he is insistent that we send him printed information as he claims that he is not allowed to have anything to read. Yet, he comes up with some rather obscure requests for information that could really only be found on a computer. I asked him today that since he is in Augusta that perhaps he should go through a library in Augusta and
Yes, we help this patron regularly in Falmouth, he requires some limits sometimes when he asks for too much of our staff time, but we treat him like any other homebound patron in determining what we can do for him. Which is why he approaches other libraries, it seems most just tell him no completely.
Welcome to the club - we were yesterday and last Saturday. I've heard from other libraries, including in Augusta, that he's called them. He asks us for the names, addresses, and phone numbers of libraries, mostly in cities with the same name but in different states. Also asked me for some chemical compound information - a food additive. I told him we charge for printing and mailing (which we do) and since he had no way to pay me, I was unable to help him with the articles. He also told me he was at Riverside, and said he used
We've been getting calls (multiple per week) and mail from him at the University of Maine in Orono. he always asks for food additive chemical compounds and any information we can send him about them, but we just don't do research like that for patrons, one or two compounds maybe, but not 40+. Unfortunately he has directed many of his questions at one of my colleagues, but most of us have had an interaction or two. He also has asked for out of state library contact information.
We got calls from this same man at Rumford library. He was asking for all kinds of off the wall information and requests to be sent to his worker since she was letting him use her e-mail to receive the information. He claimed he did not have computer access. He called 3-4 times and I finally told him we did not have the staff to look up all this information for him as it would have been very labor intensive and we don't have a reference librarian. (All true.) I suggested he call an academic library and we haven't heard
I've spoken with him on numerous occasions. He usually just asks about food flavor chemicals, although on one occasion he told me he 'just wanted something to read' and I could send him the funny papers (he also mentioned 'bomb making materials' in that conversation as well as lewd photographs). I've had the phone number requests before, as well. I've looked up the phone number he calls from and it's not connected with Riverview as far as I can tell, though it says "State of Maine" on the caller ID, that's more of general information and—at the risk of having
He's called us a few times at the Gardiner Public Library. We unfortunately never have enough time to get into the weeds of what he's been researching so we haven't helped as of yet. I did make a call to Riverview once to make sure that this was a legit call and spoke to a case worker there. They said that it was OK for their patients to call and ask for these materials but that due to postage/staff time/etc that understood if we could not assist their patients.
So nice that the patron remembers McArthur Library! I looked back in our incident log and we received multiple calls during July of 2017. It shows the calls were at all times of the day and night and were directed to both Reference Staff and the Library Director. We pulled in the police and the staff at Riverview to make the calls stop.
If it is the same person (S.L.) we know this gentlemen. (Then again, our caller /never said/ he was at Riverview). He used to come into our library--pre-computers--many years before computers--and chat with our Reference Librarian, Jackie. They knew each other from high school. Well, things became rough and he was institutionalized at Riverview in Augusta, decades ago. He has stayed in touch with us over the years with some rather off-beat questions. He now seems to have a list of Maine Libraries he's working through. We thought we were the only one because of the original connection. 😁 He

A group of concerned citizens has approached the library about putting on an informational panel discussion about inspiring and creating affordable housing, year-round rentals, and thwarting the AirB&B takeover of our small coastal town. As this is an issue that has been impacting many Maine towns, I wonder if other libraries have resources to share with me. We are looking for an attorney or municipal planner who can speak about what the local government can do to address the housing issues.
We are thinking of new programming for the fall. We love the idea of having children read to a therapy dog. I know some libraries around the state have done so in the past much all seems to have been pre-covid. Have any libraries done this? I have tried googling but have not been able to find anything other than how to train a dog to become a therapy dog. Does anyone have any suggestions, information, contact info etc?

Throughout the year, we have occasional requests to reserve our conference room for Zoom meetings or other private uses. As summer approaches, with this being a tourist community, we are beginning to see the requests rise. I have recently had a local business owner request to reserve the room a couple of times a week for a couple of hours for at least the next month. We're looking to replace our carpet in our youth services room, and we're considering doing a hard surface (e.g., linoleum) in lieu of carpet. It's easier to keep clean, and it lasts longer. We are, naturally, worried about noise levels.

An ultra-fast read that does a superb job of letting the reader follow eighth grader Hazard as he struggles with denial about anger, and the circumstances surrounding his suspension from the football team after a particularly hard hit. Ordered to work with a psychologist (who never really appears in the story, save for the exercises he assigns), Hazard gradually grows in terms of insight. In the process, his answers to the assignments, coupled with forwarded emails from his father he shares with his therapist, as well as interviews

It's on par with the skill Gerry Boyle has to capture those realities for adults. In this book, readers follow Harvard and his five year old brother Roger during the summer they, and their grieving father come to Kettle Hole, Maine where Dad grew up. Their father, a pediatrician, is still frozen by guilt and sadness following his mistake that led to the
I wanted to get the word out early about this author event we have coming up in July, so that any book clubs or individuals who are interested have enough time to get book(s) & read in advance of the event:
Author Karen Odden will be visiting McArthur Library in Biddeford at 6:30 p.m on Monday July 18th, for an in-person talk on "Murder, Mayhem & Mystery in 1870s London" followed by Q&A and book signing, and we want to extend the invitation to all librarians and your library patrons who may be interested in attending.
All are spoken for! Thank you for helping me clean off my desk!

The Windham Public Library is looking to digitize its collection of Windham High School Yearbooks. This will involve carefully scanning the pages of all of the yearbooks into a computer software program. Being comfortable with technology is a must. Step-by-step training will be provided. This could be an excellent opportunity for a library science student internship/field work. I have written a critique for the Maine Sportsman on a book released yesterday (6/1/22) titled, 'Let's Go for a Ride' by William Livezey and Daren Worcester, ISBN 978-1-68475-019-1.
It is an excellent autobiography of Maine longest tenured undercover Game Warden. The retail price is $26.95 plus $4 shipping.
I have copies on hand and can offer the book to libraries for $22 plus $4 shipping.

I would like to add my two cents on the subject of Mary Peverada and her invaluable contributions to Portland Public Library, the profession of librarianship, and the unbelievable amount of fun she has brought to the workplace over the 32-ish years that I have worked at PPL. I will leave it simple: she is an amazing librarian and a phenomenal colleague. Even though I work in another department of the library, I feel so blessed to have been here during her benevolent reign as Children's Librarian Extraordinaire.
Island Readers & Writers (IRW) has released its annual Summer Booklist. Twice a year, IRW enlists the help of librarians, teachers, and parents to aid our staff in reading and reviewing new books for children and teens, especially those from Maine writers. This year, we’ve included graphic novels as a category alongside picture books, middle grade novels, and YA fiction, for a total of 34 recommended books.
Due to a core authentication server being offline for unexpected maintenance, access to electronic resources for the Digital Maine Library is currently unavailable. This is also impacting CloudLibrary users who do NOT use the Patron API.
The author Richard Ford recently gave us many extra copies of his books with the expectation that the State Library would keep some and we would give the rest away, either to other libraries or to other parties who could use them, e.g. retirement homes.
Libraries who receive these books can use them as they see fit. Whether you want to add the books to your collections or give them away as gifts or prizes, it is up to you. If you have a home for these books or know of an organization that would benefit from having

I'm retiring today after a very looong time at the Portland Public Library. It has been a pleasure being a part of the Maine library community. I haven't been quite as active in the last few years - but certainly spent plenty of time on the board and conference committees. I have very happy memories and have learned so much from all that I met.
Mary, The children and YS library workers of southern Maine were so lucky to have you as an advocate for excellence in children's library services and programming. Best wishes on your retirement. Deb

Enjoy your well deserved retirement. Working with you on committees was such a pleasure. Here's a nod to that cardinal that follows you on your early morning dog walks.

I am delighted to share that Sen. Collins's and Sen. King are including the the Goodall Library in the "HUD" Congressional Directed spending proposal! Like with Rep. Pingree's initial support, this is a lengthy process, but will fund just under $3 million of our project, if approved on the floor. This will make groundbreaking possible next spring!
Wonderful news, Chip! I am hearing in a meeting right now from King's office that once your project gets on the Congressional radar, they will try to help find other pools of funding as well, even if a given project does not get picked up in any given round.

Here we smiled as we have one bathroom which is a recently added luxury! More than 60 years of running up to the Community Hall or a board member's house was preferred to the portapotty. We even had a bumper sticker created in celebration of this life changing event. This is not to say I don't appreciate the seriousness of your email, I just recognize the wide range of libraries here in Maine. *Heather Logan* *Director*
I want to offer my patrons discovery kits. Which discovery kits or cataloged items in your "Library of Things" circulate the most? Do you allow these kits to circulate via interlibrary loan, if any, or not at all? Thank you all in advance for your valuable feedback!

I must say that if it wasn't intentional (to make sure we all read to the bottom...), the book choice in your signature (in combination with your question, that is) was rather perfect :)
We have always had single stall public bathrooms, and even then, it's a challenge to keep more than one person from going in (excluding of course situations of actual need, when caregivers and/or parents are involved, for instance). I have always considered ourselves very fortunate to not have a multi-stall restroom situation, as I can only imagine (and have heard) the issues that arise in other

I've attended several pieces of training in the past, and a lot base their workshops around the Run, Hide, Fight video put out by the City of Houston. It might be a good jumping-off point: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5VcSwejU2D0 I would definitely involve the local services in whatever training you figure out.
