Hello Maine Librarians!

We recently hosted an author event at our library that was so fun and
successful that I'd like to let you all know about it. Jen Dupree, who
many of you may know as the director at Hobbs Memorial Library, has
recently published* The Miraculous Flight of Owen Leach*. Jen's event at
our library was an "in conversation" event with another author/librarian,
Elisha Emerson, and it was both well-received and well-attended. Jen was
able to bring her own books to sell, so she was completely self-contained
and easy for us to host.

Good morning, libraries,

Here's a little Friday morning question: does your library circulate hotspot devices? If your answer is yes, would you be willing to answer a few more questions?

If your answer is "no" to one or both of these questions, that's all, thank you! But if your answer is "yes" to both questions, let's talk. And by talk, I mean "here are the further questions which I'd appreciate you answering in a reply email".

Introduction to Health Literacy for Libraries - Wednesday, June 15, 10:00 am - 12:00 pm CDT
Health Literacy is the ability to obtain, process, and understand basic health information and services. The National Assessment of Adult Literacy indicates only 12% of Americans have the necessary health literacy skills. Health literacy skills include locating health services, understanding drug labels, and following treatment instructions. Libraries are a natural conduit for working to improve the health literacy of their communities. Through print and digital resources, programs, and partnerships - libraries can bring attention to the critical need for health literacy.

Have you had a terrible experience that you'd like to share? Do you have a

Dear Colleagues,

As part of the cooperative style here at Maine Authors Publishing, I will be lucky to have an author helping me at our vendor table each day! They are available to sign copies of their books, answer your questions, in addition to helping me at the table.

On Monday, stop by and meet Robert Spencer, author of two books: Prospects, and The Spinster's Hope Chest, and I hear another one in the works! Bob latest book, Prospects, Mining Maine for Riches-a novel, takes place in 1897 near Maine's Oxford County pegmatite mines. Canadian miner, Clarence Potter feels welcomed

Hi All,

I have a young patron who is looking for a book that was read aloud to him about 5 years ago. He doesn't remember the title or author but it has to do with children trapped on an island and there is either a kraken or a whale. But he is pretty sure it was a kraken. He knows it's a chapter book but has no idea if it was middle grade or not.

Let me say upfront that this is an excellent choice for any library, public
or school, where fiction that addresses the toxicity of bullying and/or
gender issues is important. This book covers both while wrapping an
intriguing story around them. Many will figure out what both Aubrey and
Joel are hiding/afraid to tell each other early on, but that hardly
matters. They've been best friends for years, but now that they're at the
end of sixth grade, things are changing and neither feels like they have
any control.
Aubrey was too

Hello all-

As part of the work we are doing with the Gulf of Maine Research Institute, we are participating in a STEM video showcase all this week through May 17. What does that mean? It means that if you have 10 minutes here and there you should check out the hundreds of (short) videos that talk about different STEM projects happening across the country and around the world that are aimed at improving STEM learning opportunities for youth and adults. All the projects are federally funded. The focus this year is on broadening participation and increasing access and equity

This message is aimed squarely at our public libraries. If you are the appropriate person in your public library to read and respond, great, keep reading! If you are not either in a public library, or you are in a public library but not the person who manages its Zoom account, you are no less great, you're just great in a different way. We've gotten a couple of questionable Book Requests through our website form in the past few weeks. The first request was for a book called Bidet, and the second was for a book about Covid. In the comments of both requests they mention that Covid cases in Maine are "skyrocketing." The contact information varies. One claimed to be from the "Maine Hospice Association," and the other claimed to be "Masjid Omar Al-Farooq," (which is a mosque in Canada). The contact information was correct for each organization, down to the phone number. An interesting tidbit is that they consistently list their library

across a treasure trove of historic family photos, newspaper clippings and
other such things. They would like to digitalize these and put them out

We've already kind of dismissed Ancestry since you have to pay to have
access to this type of information from them. Are there any

Hi all,

This came out a few months ago, but if you have not yet heard about or read it, I highly recommend: reading it, printing it, tacking it to your wall, and sharing it with colleagues:

https://www.ala.org/advocacy/intfreedom/problematicauthorsqa

It is a Q&A guide for librarians, on challenges to books by "problematic" authors - I put the word in quotes because as this document agrees, that is a highly subjective term and we should all keep that in mind.

Your library can participate in a new public health initiative created by the nonprofit Safe Space Radio for all the libraries in Maine. If you would like to join us in sharing this free resource in your library, please contact Dr. Hallward directly at [log in to unmask] and she will send you some table tents. A few months ago I shared information about the table tent project that the Scarborough Public Library piloted for Safe Space Radio (www.SafeSpaceRadio.com). More than sixty Maine libraries are now participating! Here's a recent segment on Channel 6 -- part of their "Let's Talk About It" program

Hello!

Do you love reading and recommending young adult titles (and are willing to
read a lot of them in a year)? Are you interested in working with a group
of awesome librarians who love that too? Do you work in a school setting?
You might just be the perfect fit for the North Star YA Award!

NMCC needs about a half dozen more bags. We could especially use larger bags - 11x17"? - because we send out a lot of children's books. Thank you for considering! ~Ann

Hi everybody!

We're having a mushroom hunting program (Wild Mushroom Hunting in Maine: Spring Season) hosted by the Mushroom Hunting Foundation! The Mushroom Hunting Foundation teaches people how to safely enjoy their own local edible mushroom species. With an amazing slideshow of their own photography, Ryan and Emily will explain the science and safety rules of mushroom hunting, and the astonishingly diverse and colorful fungi found in the woods here. They will explain in depth about certain spring-season species that are "safe for beginners" to identify and cook with.

Title: Attainable Approaches to Web Archiving for Maine Contemporary
Archives

Description: Web archivist Anna Perricci will join Maine Contemporary
Archives for an open discussion of attainable approaches to web archiving
and what they could entail for Maine archivists with limited resources. Web
archiving is an intensive process that relies on tools that aren't easy for
most of us to access. Using our knowledge of web archiving and digital
preservation, we'll discuss strategies that may or may not fit the
definition of web archiving, but still help us in our mission to preserve
materials related to current events in Maine.
