Hello library land -

I am pursuing a PhD in Public Policy at the Muskie School of Public Service
at the University of Southern Maine. My dissertation explores digital
literacy education in Maine’s public libraries.

Please take my questionnaire at this link.
<https://forms.gle/qpuaCDEiAeHagSQ7A> The questionnaire should take 5-10
minutes. The survey is open to all librarians in Maine’s public libraries
that deliver or oversee digital literacy education to patrons. Any input
regarding your involvement in digital literacy education would be greatly
appreciated!

Hello,

We're joining the Minerva consortium in the future and with that transition, we're going to be issuing new library cards to our patrons. It got our staff to wondering what library cards look like at other Maine libraries. So... show me your cards! If you would, I'd love to get a picture of the front of your card (and the back to if you want) so I can see some of the designs that are out there. Plain or fancy, send along what you have.

Hi All,

Last week Lincolnville Community Library hosted Tim O’Brien, author of The Maine Roadshow: A Roadside Tour of the State’s History, Culture, Food, Funk & Oddities. He attracted a good audience who truly enjoyed his Slideshow of photos of his discoveries in the State of Maine. Tim was very personable, an excellent speaker and storyteller, and his slide presentation was very fun.

We have seen a huge need for lunch foods at our campus. Students are eating the candy and coffee I supply at alarming and unhealthy rates; and students are showing up in class overstimulated, disruptive or crashing. Not necessarily the same but suggestive.
Can anyone recommend lunch type foods we can stock in our food pantry without refrigeration? We have some tuna and crackers, anything else? We have a microwave available.
This is particularly important in the face of a federal shutdown.
Thank you!

Please excuse any cross-posting. This is a huge win for digital equity if it is enacted. Please consider showing your support today...

In a HUGE win for libraries and advocates for an open internet, FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel proposed the reinstatement of net neutrality rules, starting with a vote of the full commission next month! Net neutrality is essential to libraries fulfilling our public mission.

As a cataloger, I’ll share what has worked for our library. Our acquisitions staff tuck a written note to the top of each item which has a circulation date that comes after the date the item arrived. The note stays in the item until that date passes and the folks who handle the clearing of processing know to leave those items for clearing until the date noted. This saves the need for adding/removing item messages.

Good afternoon everyone!

I am retiring on October 2! I have loved my 30 years here at the Edythe
Dyer Community Library, but now I’m ready for a change of pace. Keep a
lookout for a job posting soon, this is a wonderful place to work with
awesome people (both staff and patrons)!

If you find yourselves in the Bangor area on November 11, please stop by

Hello folks. We have a bunch of exciting things happening at Scarborough Public Library next week that I wanted to share. I hope you don't mind; I'm really excited about this fun stuff.

On Tuesday, September 26, we have a visit from the Tinker Bus from Fiddlehead Arts at 10am YAY! and the amazing Betsy Sholl at 6:30pm. If you haven't read her new book of poetry "As If a Song Could Save You," I highly recommend it and her. It's gorgeous. This is in-person only because Betsy requested cozy, but open to all. Registration requested because of space limitations:

At Walker we are currently weeding some of our video games that haven't
gone out in the past few years. If you would like some and are on van
delivery, feel free to claim them on our google sheet. We have mostly PS4
and Xbox One games along with a small amount of Nintendo Switch, 3DS, and
Wii games. They do still have labels on the case.
If you'd like any of them, go into the google sheet and put your library
name in the "Claimed by" cells next to the game(s) you want. We will send

Good morning.

I am seeking templates for art policies. Wiscasset Public has been "lent
several pieces of art over the years that are on permanent display. The
library is carrying insurance on these pieces. Recently, another individual
has offered to donate another piece of art for permanent display.

The Board of Trustees are interested in writing a policy that covers:
1. who pays the insurance,
2. how long the library would display these items before they were
considered library property and could then be sold
3. Not taking any items that have any restrictions

I am a middle and high school librarian who is the only certified librarian

ultimate goal is to provide them with a bank of lessons that are linked to

Folks,

The League of Women Voters - Downeast produced a superb program "Book

historical and political perspective: tensions between First Amendment
rights and rights of parental control; whether and how book bans reflect
the tip of the iceberg of other coercive ambitions: controlling ideas,
controlling culture, controlling people, etc. What is happening in Maine

Hi Everyone in Library Land,

I just wanted to share an awesome program that I had about Oyster Aquaculture and the Maine Oyster Trail. The speakers were Annie Fagan and Jaclyn Robidoux from the Maine Sea Grant and they looked at the life cycle of oysters and in particular how Maine's oyster culture has been expanding since the 1970s. The second half of the program was on the Maine Oyster Trail and how marketing and aquatourism around Maine is helping local farmers and a variety of tangential businesses. I would highly recommend this program and we had a great turnout

Do you LOVE event planning?

MLA has a great opportunity for you to get involved as the MLA Conference
Committee Chair. In this role you will help us plan, promote, execute, and
assess our annual conference. The MLA annual conference brings together
library workers from across Maine (and beyond!) for professional
development and networking.

This is a new role - so the right person will be able to co-design the role
with the MLA President, Vice-President, Past-President, Interest Group
Chairs, and other members of the conference planning committee. Please note
you must be an MLA member to chair a committee.

Hello All,

The Rockport Public Library will be closed from Oct 2nd to early November
to replace our damaged flooring. We are hoping to reopen to the public
the week of November 6th.

We will be shutting off the ability to request items through ILL on Sept
25th in hopes that things won't build up in an awful way at your libraries
or at the sorting warehouse. We will also be asking patrons to hold items
at their homes for the duration of the closure. We apologize in advance for
issues this causes to the greater library community.

Good afternoon, all,

Our little granite library has really suffered from the humidity we've
been experiencing this year. I've had to weed out a depressing quantity
of books that were damaged by mildew and mold, many being core items
that need to be replaced. Does anyone know of grant providers that would
be looking for applicants in this situation? I'm hoping to apply to a
few places this fall so we can build our collection back up.

Hello folks.

On Thursday, Sept 14 there is a Maine Calling program about libraries. Yay! Listen, call in, and share with your pals if you feel so inclined. It's from 11am-12pm, with a rebroadcast at 7pm.
Their description: Libraries today are about much more than lending books. We talk with Maine library leaders about the rapidly expanding role of libraries, especially with demand for digital services and access to technology. And we learn about the challenges librarians face in these changing times, from being more inclusive to navigating political controversies to making the most of limited budgets.

Does anyone know if the new Scontras Center has a website yet? (Learned about it from a recent episode of Maine Calling.)

If so, what is the URL?

Thank you,
Barbara

Good afternoon,

The Buck Memorial Library will be closed from September 24th-October 16th,

Are other libraries currently having problems with Library World?
We're experiencing major delays in all functions. We've tried shutting
down a few times with no luck. We've contacted Networkmaine and they say
our speed looks fine on their end.
Thanks for feedback.

Hello Library Friends,

I wanted to share the news that Maine author Mary Morton Cowan’s has
recently released the middle-grade novel, *TROUBLE IN NATHAN’S WOODS*, and
is looking to do school and library events. I have seen Mary present and
she is engaging and informative as she brings history to life.

*TROUBLE IN NATHAN’S WOODS* begins in 1917. The First World War rages in
Europe, yet eleven-year-old Nathan learns that enemy spies lurk in New
Hampshire, where he lives in his family’s lumber camp—and they intend to
burn the woods! Convinced that Pa’s new German woodsman is a spy, Nathan

I have to share the success of the Liberty Library Summer Reading program.
Participants donated $885 to the Liberty Area Food Pantry by reading.
Readers read for 30-minutes a day this summer in order to mark off a circle
on their Reading Record. They could read the book themselves or listen to a
book read aloud ... or a combination of both. The majority of participants
marked off 40 days = $20! 46 people turned in their records: 25 children, 5
teens, and 17 adults.

Hello Everyone,

I'm looking for suggestions on email utilities that permit sending bulk
mail to patrons, such as newsletters and event announcements. My present
email utility (Zoho mail) does not allow sending these.

Thank you for your suggestions!

Hi everyone,

Over the past week or so, Skidompha Library has been struggling with our
Wordpress password being reset by someone (or something) we don't know. We
are trying our best to reset passwords and resolve this issue but wanted to
give everyone a heads-up/reminder to be watchful of their websites and
email security. We would also love to hear from anyone else who might have
dealt with a similar issue and what you did to resolve it.

Please help our friends at Starnet and the Space Science Institute (the NASA@MyLibrary folks) decide what direction they next go in with their work by taking their survey.

Their information:

One of the most common requests from STAR Net Partner Libraries is "can you help us partner with our local school?" ALA has some good resources HERE<https://www.ala.org/alsc/publications-resources/professional-tools/school-public-library-partnerships> and ALSC even has a list of successful partnerships you can view HERE<https://www.ala.org/alsc/aboutalsc/external-relationships/schoolplcoop>. We also know that Community Dialogues<https://www.starnetlibraries.org/deia/community-dialogues/> are an especially meaningful way to identify goals for collaboration in your community.
