The University of Maine at Machias invites applicants for a two year, fixed-length teaching faculty position in Geographic Information Systems at the rank of Lecturer. The anticipated start date is August 2024. The Environmental GIS program is housed in the Division of Environmental and Biological Sciences.

The successful candidate will teach 12 credits per semester (3 – 4 courses).  Our interdisciplinary curriculum incorporates geospatial technology, data acquisition, environmental studies, geographic inquiry, computer and data science, programming, and design. Teaching will be a combination of on campus and distance courses.  Courses incorporate hands-on, applied projects that reinforce key competencies and teach soft skills required for success in natural resource and community-based careers.

This position will also be responsible for maintaining the GIS laboratory equipment and software.

Required:

• Graduate degree in geospatial technology or closely related field
• Ability to maintain the equipment and software in the GIS lab with assistance of IT personnel
• Two years of experience in the workforce applying GIS to issues in community- or natural resource-based situations

Preferred:

• Ph.D. in geospatial technology or closely related field
• Post-secondary teaching experience, particularly involving project-based instruction
• Ability to teach courses in some combination of the following topics:
  • GIS I
  • GIS II
  • Satellite Positioning and Navigational Systems
  • Remote Sensing
  • Municipal Applications of GIS
  • Python Programming in GIS
  • Community Applications in GIS
  • Geospatial Careers
• Five years of experience in the workforce applying GIS to issues in community- or natural resource-based situations.
